WINTER TYRES, what you need to know (02/01/2012)
Winter is still with us, dark evenings will be for a while yet, and although we have not had all that snow and freezing weather we had last November & December, we have yet to get through January & February so there is time yet ! Some winter tyres have become scarce, however I still have some winter tyres in stock, so have a  chat with me soon, or even better, come and have a look, buy from your local independant man ! Don't leave it too late.
Winter tyres and why you should fit them to your car or van.

1, Winter tyres have been developed to get you to your destination safely in the coldest months of the year. Their advanced features equip them with the right balance between comfort and performance avoiding the risks associated with winter roads
2, Driving with summer (our normal all weather) tyres during the winter season is risky. Indeed, when the temperature drops below +7 deg C, they lose their elasticity which vastly reduces the performance in rain, snow and ice.
3, The most important argument in favour of winter tyres is, of course, their greater safety. The advantages are clearly visible in comparative tests with summer tyres (our normal all weather tyres). Winter tyres give a much shorter braking distance on wet or snow covered road surfaces, at temperatures below +7 deg C This is where winter tyres really perform best, in these very low temperatures.

4, The efficiency of winter tyres strongly depends on tread wear. Winter tyre performance is reduced when the tread depth drops below 4mm

5, Braking with Antilock Brakes (ABS) as on most modern vehicles:
Comparing the braking distances of summer and winter tyres, produced the following results
At a temperature of 0 deg C on a wet road at 56mph, braking distance is reduced by 5.3 metres.
At temperatures below 0 deg C on a snow covered road at 31mph distance is reduced by 8.3 metres.
Test results as performed by Pirelli tyres (Power is nothing without control) !

Motorcycle riders  latest advice update (02/01/2012)
Winter is here & as you have probably noticed it's raining alot, (at least no snow or ice) so the importance of good tyres should be high on your priority list. Have a look at my bike pages as there are some very good tyres from Michelin (Pilot Road 3), Avon (Storm 2 Ultra), Dunlop (Roadsmart) and Maxxis (Diamond) , ideal for "all weather" riders, lets face it, it is going to rain, this is England !
So for "all weather" riders, be safe & get some good rubber under you ! By the way, I ride on Michelin Pilot Road 3 & can say they do make a big difference.
Give me a ring for a friendy chat about your requirements and what we can do.
Food for thought !
Testing has proven that tyres worn to the 1.6mm legal limit can increase stopping distances by nearly a bus length ! Source Continental tyres (Premium German tyre manufacturers) That's the difference between stopping and having an accident !
Think about it now, before its to late

On the point of safety,
When changing a wheel, ie fitting your spare wheel, it is very important to ensure that the wheel nuts are fitted the correct way. This means with the flat side facing you, taper to the wheel !  Look at the picture of the spacesaver wheel on the left. It has THREE nuts on the wrong way and only ONE the correct way. That's the one on the lower right which I turned around for the photo, as this car came in with ALL the nuts on the wrong way. This is not the first time, and won't be the last, but they are very very lucky the wheel didn't fall off !
